WALGREEN'S - WOODDALE, IL

The way it is
The driver's side is up against a curbbing with shrubs. Very narrow for a person with a walker, or cane to get out of a car or van. Persons using a wheelchair or motor cart can not use this spot. The ramp opening is on the passenger side. Parking far enough over to the right to make enough room for a handicapped driver to egress would block the ramp.
The opening has a steep pitch that is very hard to get up with a cane or walker. A person in a wheelchair has to work very hard. A powered cart may make it easier. This is the only spot on this side of the building. This is where the snow is also plowed in the winter. Real considerstion for the disabled.

On the other side of the building or shrub is another ramp opening.

There are 2 sixteen foot handicapped parking spaces.

A disabled person has to walk quite a distance to get to the ramp.
I walked both openings with my cane. A person with a cane or walker would barely make it. up and coming down would fall forward because of the pitch. A person with a wheelchair or auto cart would make it up, but; has to be very careful coming down because of the pitch.

The way it should be

  1. This is where the sidewalk should be open with the cross stripping for the passenger side, NOT a ramp in front of the pillar next to a shrub, so that a handicapped person can fall!
Accessible parking spaces serving a particular building shall be located on the shortest accessible route of travel from adjacent parking to an accessible entrance.

  2. The shrubs should NOT be there and this is where the second opening should be.

  3. Both of these openings should be directly to the door. The pitch for both openings should be gradual so it can be accessed by wheelchair, cart, walker, or cane.

Who is okaying these plans? Who are the federal and state governments going to charge and fine for discrimination against the handicapped?
