Mr. Kenneth R. Weigand
Divisional Vice President

Walgreens

Deerfield, Illinois 60015
Dear Mr. Weigand:
The United Voice for Disabled Americans is in receipt of your letter dated January 3, 2003 regarding your responsibility for the Walgreens stores.
Mr. Weigand, according to your letter the Walgreens stores that do not meet the ADA Accessibility laws are being corrected. We do not understand how this could be done without the impute from the Illinois Attorney General's Office, Bureau for Disabilities, Lisa Dana.
Lisa Dana for the past year has been checking out your stores because of our complaint we filed against you. Please be sure you send her a list of all the stores that need to be corrected. Lisa Dana also has to know what corrections you are going to make. The cities or suburbs have to be notified of the corrections that have to be made so they make sure they do not break the ADA Accessibility Law again. The Illinois Bureau has to give the final okay or if it has to be redone Walgreens may find they will be fined for not doing it correctly the first time. These fines will be against everyone involved including the cooperate office of Walgreens.
The United Voice for Disabled Americans has to be involved in the store corrections because we were the one that filed the complaint against Walgreens. There is too much at stake here for the persons with disabilities not to have these corrections done correctly for accessibility to your stores. Mr. Weigand, persons with disabilities have been discriminated against long enough. If the city and suburbs had enforced the ADA Accessibility Law correctly Walgreens would not be investigated by the Illinois Attorney General's Office. Everybody interrupts these laws to meet their need and not the persons with disabilities needs.
We know you did not check with Lisa Dana regarding the Walgreens store at Bloomingdale & Irving Park Rds. All corrections to this store have to be discussed with Lisa Dana. The store on Irving Park Rd in Itasca moved a handicap sign and now we have to posts in front of the handicap space. Walgreens did not check the handicap openings because the slant still does not meet the Accessibility Law. They are still to steep. Walgreens is still breaking the ADA Accessibility Law.
The Unified Voice of Disabled America has another issue to be questioned. When, then, Senator Lisa Madigan and Yolanda Treiguts met with Walgreens, one automatic shopping cart in each of your stores in Illinois was discussed. It was our impression that Walgreens would be putting an automatic cart in each of their Illinois stores during the year of 2003. There are quite a number of persons with disabilities questioning when the automatic shopping cart is going to start appearing in each of your stores. Please let us know when?
Mr. Weingard, the Unified Voice of Disabled America will be in constant touch with Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madison and Illinois Bureau for Disabilities, Lisa Dana until all your stores meet the ADA Accessibility Law. We are going to check these store out ourselves or have another disabled person make sure it meets the needs of a disabled person in areas we can't make ourselves.
Please check out our web site, www.bonits.net/UVDA-0.htm. This will explain to you what we are all about.
Cordially,
Rosemarie A. Botthof
