The way it is

A parking lot entrance to the post office with a sidewalk opening.

Entrance to the post office with obstruction.

Side of building with designated handicapped parking spaces. The open sidewalk is in front of bushes along the side of the building.

Ramp up to sidewalk is much too steep.

The way it should be
  1. Each parking space, except on-street spaces, shall consist of a sixteen foot wide parking space including an eight foot wide diagonally striped access aisle. Adjacent parking spaces shall not share a common access aisle. Each parking space shall have its own access aisle and all access aisles shall blend to a common level with an accessible route. Parking spaces and access aisles shall be level with surface slopes not exceeding 1:50 (2%) in all directions.

  2. Accessible parking spaces serving a particular building shall be located on the shortest accessible route of travel from adjacent parking to an accessible entrance.

  3. Curb ramps shall be provided wherever an accessible route crosses a curb (ADAAG 4.7.1) and shall comply with rules pertaining to slope, width, surface, etc.

  4. Entrance to the post office should not have any obstructions. This is where the open sidewalk should be direct to the front door.

  5. There could be two designated handicapped parking spaces to the right of the walk and one on the left of the walk. Each of handicapped parking spaces should be 16 feet wide and not sharing stripped areas.

Who is okaying these plans? Who are the federal and state governments going to charge and fine for discrimination against the handicapped?
