On October 8, 2002, the Access Board will hold a public meeting in Portland, Oregon on guidelines it is developing on accessible public rights-of-way. The meeting will provide a forum for interested persons to provide comment on draft guidelines the Board released last June. The guidelines cover pedestrian access to sidewalks and streets, including crosswalks, curb ramps, street furnishings, parking, and other components of public rights-of-way. The Board is developing these guidelines under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which covers access to a wide range of facilities in the public and private sectors, and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), which requires access to certain federally funded facilities. The guidelines, which are posted on the Board's website at http://www.access-board.gov/news/prow-release.htm, are available for public comment until October 28, 2002.

The public meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to submit comments either orally or in writing. The Board seeks information and feedback, including usability and cost data, on the draft guidelines and welcomes comments from all interested persons, including persons with disabilities, design professionals and civil engineers, government agencies, pedestrian advocates, and others. The meeting will be held from 8:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Hilton Portland Hotel, 921 SW Sixth Avenue, Portland, Oregon, with a reception to follow. The meeting and reception are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required, although participants who wish to provide oral comments are encouraged to contact the Board in advance of meeting. For further information, or to sign up to provide testimony, contact Kathy Roy Johnson of the Board at johnson@access-board.gov or by phone at (202) 272-0041 (voice) or (202) 272-0082 (TTY).

Sign language interpreters and real-time captioning will be provided at this meeting. Please note that it is the Board's policy to provide a fragrance-free environment at all public meetings. The Board therefore requests that attendees refrain from wearing perfume, cologne and other fragrances and use unscented personal care products.
